The Woman / Tree project arises from the need to search for mythological references to address the confrontation between two political and social movements that emerged in the mid-twentieth century: ecology and feminism or ecofeminism.
In mythology, the tree cult is related to the mother goddess. The mother goddess is connected to the moon because the moon cannot be separated from the growth of nature, the tide and movement of the sea, the physiology of women and her fertile periods. At the same time, in poetry the phases of the moon are used to speak of different stages of human life: birth, fullness, decline and disappearance.
Silver is the metal that is closely related to the moon. Hesiod in the Theogony identifies the silver period with the maternal age, when humans (trees) fully unite with their mothers (earth). According to the premise that the mother divinity is the main source of vitality, female fertility is considered autonomous like the tree, and the tree will be the object of worship because it is the metaphor of the epiphany divinity.
From the 1970s to the present day, some women artists have used their bodies as a metaphor or as a tool to express their reflections on political and social conflicts through art. Consequently, in our days, the perspective of ecology-feminism will be an opportunity to put the landscape and the female body in dialogue, as a return to the maternal entrails.
